How to Set Up a Home Security Camera System Without Professional Help

You do not need to pay a security company hundreds of dollars to install cameras around your home. Modern wireless cameras are designed for homeowners to set up themselves, and the whole process usually takes an afternoon.
Wired vs Wireless Cameras
Wireless cameras are easier to install since they connect over WiFi and many run on rechargeable batteries. The tradeoff is that you need to recharge them every few months, and they depend on a strong WiFi signal. Wired cameras (PoE) give you a more reliable connection and constant power, but you need to run ethernet cables.
For most homes, a mix works best – wireless cameras for spots where running cables is impractical, and wired cameras for critical entry points like the front door and driveway.
Where to Place Your Cameras
Cover these spots first: front door, back door, driveway, and garage. These are where most break-ins happen. Mount cameras at 8-10 feet height, angled slightly downward. This gives you the best field of view and makes it harder for someone to tamper with the camera.
Storage Options
Most cameras offer cloud storage for a monthly fee ($3-10 per camera). If you want to avoid subscription costs, look for cameras with local storage via microSD card or a system that records to a local NVR (network video recorder). Brands like Reolink and Eufy focus on local storage without mandatory subscriptions.
Privacy Considerations
Point your cameras at your own property, not at neighbors or public sidewalks. Most states have laws about recording in areas where people expect privacy. Indoor cameras should have physical privacy shutters or an easy way to disable them when you are home.
