How a Smart Thermostat Saved Me $480 Last Year
I installed an Amazon Smart Thermostat in March 2025. By the end of the year, my electric and gas bills were down $40 a month compared to the year before. That is $480 in savings from a $60 device.
What Changed
The biggest savings came from scheduling. Before the smart thermostat, I left my heat at 70 all day even when I was at work. Now it drops to 62 when I leave and warms up 30 minutes before I get home. I do not notice the difference in comfort, but my utility company notices the difference in usage.
Summer vs Winter Savings
Winter savings were bigger for me since I heat with natural gas. The thermostat cut my gas bill from about $120 to $85 per month in the cold months. Summer AC savings were smaller – about $20 per month – because my house stays naturally cool in the shade.
Tips to Maximize Savings
Set your away temperature at least 5 degrees below your comfort temperature. Use the scheduling feature instead of relying on auto-away detection. And check your energy reports monthly – most smart thermostats show you exactly where your money is going.
