Water Leak Sensors Saved Me From a $5,000 Repair

Last November my water heater started leaking at 3 AM. A $20 Govee water leak sensor on the basement floor caught it and blasted my phone with alerts. I shut off the water main within 10 minutes. The plumber said if that leak had gone undetected for another 6-8 hours, I would be looking at serious floor and wall damage. $20 sensor vs $5,000 repair – easiest smart home investment I have ever made.

Where to Place Leak Sensors

Under the water heater, behind the washing machine, under the kitchen sink, near the toilet supply line, and in the basement near the sump pump. These are the five spots where leaks happen most in homes.

Best Budget Sensors

Govee WiFi Water Sensors (3-pack) – $36. WiFi connected, loud 100dB alarm, phone alerts. No hub needed. These are what I use.

YoLink Water Leak Sensors (4-pack) – $28. LoRa wireless with incredible range (up to 1,000 ft). Need the YoLink hub ($18) but the sensors last 5+ years on a single battery.

Samsung SmartThings Water Leak Sensor – $20 each. Works with SmartThings hub and Alexa. Can trigger automations like shutting off a smart water valve.

Advanced Move: Smart Water Shutoff

For about $200-300 you can add an automatic water shutoff valve that closes when a leak is detected. It is a bigger investment but total peace of mind if you travel or work long hours. The Moen Flo is the best-known option, but LeakSmart and Dome also make good ones.
